“Rodolpho!” Frantic with joy and relief, Evangeline ran down the hillside toward the lone man standing on the road and rushed into his welcoming arms. “Oh, Rodolpho, I was afraid I’d never see you again!”

He held her close. “I’ve been searching everywhere. Oh, Evangeline, did he hurt you? Are you injured?”

“I’m fine now,” she said, clinging to him. “How did you find me?”

“I’ve been searching everywhere. When I got to the village nearby and told them I was looking for my fiancée and they heard me describe you, they got such a look! I knew they had something to tell me. It took me hours, until finally an old woman told me of the count and his castle. She told me to leave this place, that if he had taken you there, I should forget about you. But I wouldn’t. I couldn’t. I don’t care what he’s done, my beloved Evangeline. All that matters is that I have you in my arms again.”
